The T1 is the most OP tank at tier 5 right now - saide armor is weak, that just means you always point forward. Not much can pen you frontally and even those that can only have a small target to aim at.

M4 is also a good tank but I would go T1 first.

Both tanks are good in fact I'm making my way up to the M6 to unlock the top gun so I can have it ready to use on the T 20. Its more down to what play style you like and what tank class works best for you.

It’s about your play style and overall versatility - if you really don’t enjoy the T1 then go for the M4. No one can make a decision as well as you in this situation because it’s about suiting the tank attributes to what you want. I don’t stick around the American line much minus Sheridan (which I have never used outside of training room) so I’m not a fantastic advisor

M4 series are great for learning hull-down ridge fighting. T20 is pretty weak, Pershing is... mediocre? Opinions are divided on that one, I find it fairly tricky and don't really understand why my stats in it are as good as they are, because it feels weak.

T1 Heavy is broken overpowered, M6 is good but needs more careful handling. T29 is an amazing ridge holder, not terribly mobile but a great turret and the gun works well at its tier. T32 has an even better turret but a lot of people find the gun very weak due to low pen for its tier.

You go down the M4 route if you want tanks that can RAM in Mad Games (T20, Pershing, Pattons)

You go down the T1 Heavy route for that OP Tier 5 Heavy meta. That's it.

A bit late but I despise the M4 sherman and its terrible gun. You can't use the -12 degrees gun depression if you miss all your shots. I would rather play the anko which has no armor. Also, the heavy line is probably better overall especially with the buffed consumables at higher tier.

M4 gun handling isn't great, but it's not that bad. My hit rate in it is 81.54%, which is a tiny bit below my average for Tier V medium tanks, but not the lowest.
